What To Do On a First-Time Visit to Savannah, Georgia

This historical city with small-town vibes it truly a must-see for United States travel!

I had never been to Savannah before my boyfriend moved there last March.  Our relationship this past year has been weekend flights and quick trips to visit each other.  Short trips and long trips, I’ve now been to Savannah about 5 times this year.  And while I am by no means an expert (yet), I have compiled a list of all the “musts” on a first visit.  These are the most common Savannah places and for good reason – they are unforgettable!

Brunch at Collin’s Quarter  – an Australian-influenced cafe, this restaurant comes with an exceptional dining experience and delicious, decadent meals. You will not be disappointed.

Wait in line for Ice Cream at Leopold’s – award-winning, homemade ice cream! Need I say more? The line is always long and it is always worth the wait! Leopold’s has been serving up delicious treats since 1919. Stop by for a scoop or two!

Wander the Squares – Savannah has 22 squares spread over 1 mile of the city. Equipped with fountains, flowers, and park benches, no two squares are the same.  These squares are great for enjoying some take-out or finishing your Leopold’s ice cream cone.

Grab a giant Slice of Pizza at Vinnie Van Go Go’s – ever want to eat a slice of pizza bigger than your head? Serving up pizza by the slice, this pizza is a delicious pitstop from a day of bar-hopping in Savannah.

Grab an alcoholic slushy and walk River Street – Wet Willie’s Bar and Restaurant is known for providing just about every flavor of daiquiri known to man and mixing them together into delicious and dangerous combinations.  River street (and a few other parts of Savannah) allow open-container.  Get a daiquiri to-go from Wet Willie’s and walk along the River.  The city just finished construction on the bottom half of River street. It’s a beautiful strip of hotels, shops, and restaurants.  Eventually, there will be live music, making River Street a spot you won’t want to miss.

Visit the Farmer’s Market in Forsyth Park – every Saturday from 9am – 1pm at the southern end of Forsyth Park, the Farmer’s Market takes place.  Fresh veggies, honey, coffee, food trucks, and more, the Farmer’s Market is a great local Savannah experience. Make sure to grab a picture in front of the famous fountain too!

Take a Ghost Tour – This is one activity that I have yet to do in Savannah, but it is on my list! Savannah is one of the most haunted cities in the United States. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the history and stories are still fun and interesting to learn!

Visit Tybee Island – Tybee Island is a little beach town just 30 minutes from Savannah. Check out North Beach if you want to climb to the top of the lighthouse. Head all the way down to South Beach to walk the pier and explore shops and restaurants.

Below are some other great options for eating and sightseeing in Savannah.  While maybe not the top spots, still definitely worth adding to your visit if you have time!
