15 Reason I love Fall

Fall is a basic girl’s favorite season! It drives me crazy because fall has been my favorite season my whole life.  I loved fall before being basic was even a thing.  Living in Pittsburgh, PA we experience all four seasons, sometimes in the matter of one day. As much as I love the hot sun and sand, I cannot imagine a world without fall!

Similar to the way Loreli Gilmore can smell snow, I can smell fall.  I smell it before anyone is ready for it.  In late August, early September, the weather suddenly shifts. The morning is a little chillier, the leaves on the trees seem to droop a little lower to the ground than they did the day before.  The air has a distinct crispness about it. Change and transition are coming.

Fall holds a lot of significance and symbolism for me, but there are several reasons, both fun and serious as to why I really love this basic season!

  1. The temperature is perfect. It’s obvious in between; a transition between summer and fall. A switch between from hot to cold, sun to snow. The air is chilly, the sun still shines, we get rain here and there.
  2. Everything smells like a blend of cinnamon and vanilla.  Every candle that is fall themed smells like fresh baked goods.  It’s simply magical that your entire house can smell that good from lighting one candle.
  3. It’s the perfect campfire season.  I love a campfire, especially in fall when its chilly and the fire is needed.  Fires are the perfect opportunity for community and being outside with friends.
  4. The home decor is fabulous.  I am already basic for writing this post, so I have no shame in saying that I love decorating my home with pumpkins and signs that say #blessed.  There is something about the colors of fall that is very aesthetically pleasing to wake up and see all around you.
  5. Which brings me to reason #5. The amazing colors of fall.  Various shades of green, orange, and yellow visible on any tree.  Picture perfect even in their time of transition.
  6. Cozy comfort food.  I was so excited when it started to get cold last week; all I could think about was soup. Tomato basil, chicken noodle, stuffed pepper! Paired with a grilled cheese sandwich! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.
  7. Squash! Does anyone else love squash as much as me? So versatile.  Great for decorating and eating! I have a recent love for spaghetti squash, it’s super easy to cook and a healthier option than pasta.
  8. It’s race training season (hypothetically).  Though I have taken a hiatus from running during the pandemic.  I am ready to get back out there and the 90 degree heat did not help my return.  I’m ecstatic for the weather to be mild enough for me to get a comfortable 3-5 mile run in without dying of heat exhaustion.
  9. The holidays are quickly approaching. By now, the Halloween decorations have been out since July, the stores are gearing up for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Social media is bursting with pumpkins and hocus pocus quotes.  We are getting excited and ready to snuggle in with a fire, a good book, and some jack-o-lantern reese’s cups.
  10. The activities are endless! Jumping in giant piles of leaves, haunted houses, bonfires, and pumpkin picking.  There is so much to do and only 31 days in October to get it all done!
  11. It’s socially acceptable to wear all my favorite clothing. There is almost nothing I love more than a chunky sweater, except maybe a suede boot.  Mix that with all the denim in the world and you have some of my favorite things.
  12. Costumes! I have never been very good at the halloween costume game.  I’m just not that confident to be parading around looking absolutely ridiculous.  But the things people think of amazing me every year! I wish I could be so clever to come up with all the crazy costumes that fill my newsfeed throughout October.
  13. Pumpkin Flavored everything. Pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin cookies.  If you love the taste of pumpkin, this season is for you. While I do feel this has been taken a tad too far, you gotta give the people what they want.  We demand more pumpkin spice!
  14. It marks a time for change. I did a whole post about transitions and God’s timing.  You can read about it here.  I think that is one of the main reasons I love fall. It’s an obvious change that happens in God’s natural creation around us.  It feels like a good time to start thinking about change inside us too.
  15. The natural beauty takes my breath away.  Maybe I’m just a complete sap, but the leaves changing, barrels of pumpkins, gourdes, haystacks, it’s all so beautiful to me.  I genuinely enjoy seeing the pumpkins on display at the grocery store and all the home decor stacked up in Target. Even on walks around the neighborhood, nature is always putting on a show, even as it slips into hibernation for the year.

The list could probably go on and on but we have to end if somewhere. I’m curious to know, what is your favorite season and why? Are the reasons you love fall just as much as me? Share them in the comments below!

Life is hard right now, we can’t travel, there isn’t much to look forward to.  For me, I have found joy in writing about the little things.  As i sit here writing this, I’m wearing overalls, with a pumpkin candle burning, staring out into my parent’s backyard full of changing trees.  This is what I have right now.  These things make me grateful.  Especially now, it’s best to take it just one day at a time.
