Plot Twist: The Transition You didn’t See Coming

Transitions are hard.  Transitions are even harder when you didn’t know that they were coming.  I don’t know about you, but oftentimes I find myself reasoning with God on a certain transitions he is pushing me towards. When these transition periods come into view, I start to question God, (are you sure about this?) I begin to challenge God’s decision, (but what about this…?) Somedays, I agree and I get excited about the idea of moving towards something new.  I take leaps of faith into my future God is preparing for me.  Other days, I run the other direction, closing the door and snuggling back into my comfort zone.

But I have found that there is a weird feeling inside of me when God is nudging me towards change.

When you are ready for change your heart will know.  Your heart will give you a heads up to start packing.  To fold up the blankets, to put out the fire – no more cozy sleepovers in this place.  It’s time to get uncomfortable for a period of time.

Looking back,  I would say my heart prepared me for every big life change that came my way.

You start outgrowing the space you are living in.  You can feel it in your body.  You are unhappy and  you want more.  You start trying new things, toying with new ideas.  Some may work, some may not.  But suddenly what you have, no longer seems to satisfy.  You need more. You are growing into your purpose – God’s purpose, for you.

And what might be some telltale signs that God is getting you ready for something bigger?

Nothing seems to be working out where you are right now . You are frustrated with a capital F. You tried to apply to Graduate programs but the fee was more than you expected or you missed a deadline. You were living independently but due to the pandemic had to move home. You feel like you are going backwards even though you are trying to push yourself forward. Every set back you have, is springboarding you into something bigger. God is fueling a desire inside of you. The rejections, the times when it didn’t go your way, God is firing up your heart. How bad do you want it? These setbacks are just going to reassure the direction you need to be going. In my experience, when nothing is going right, it’s because we are being prepared for an opportunity that we just haven’t found yet.  Keep searching, keep pushing.

Subtle hints have been dropped about a new direction.  Maybe it’s a new city, a new career or a new social activity.  Whatever it is keeps coming up in everyday life – even when you aren’t seeking it out. These aren’t coincidences, this is God whispering in your ear.  He doesn’t want to force you (though at times it feels like he does). He wants you to come to the decision on your own. The more you hear about something, the more it may sound like a good idea.  Lean into that, pursue it.  Investigate to see if God is in it for you.

You are aching for something new (you just don’t know what yet). You feel capable of more. Where you are now is good; it’s comfortable and you are doing just fine.  But your soul is urging you for more.  You need a bigger challenge.  You need passion, you need your soul to sing every day. I am all too familiar with this feeling.  I used to think something was wrong with me. Most people would be thrilled to have what I have.  But deep inside of me from a place of truth is a desire for something bigger.  This is the hardest of all the signs.  It’s important to decipher your greed from your passion.  We always want bigger and better, it’s only natural.  But what God puts inside of us in passion, it’s a calling and most importantly it’s all for HIS Will.  Determine what makes your heart sing, what is pleasing to the Lord.  Find that and push towards it.

I’m writing this post for me, because I need to be inspired during this hard time. But I am hoping it’s beneficial to anyone who stumbles across it and needs to be encouraged. Because, now, more than ever, I feel God moving. We all need to fell as if we are being pushed towards something that is going to work for His will. I am writing this because it has held true in every instance of my life.  Those three points above –  feel it my heart, I experience it in my surroundings, and then I start to see it fall together. It’s going to happen for me and it’s going to happen for you. Until then, we just have to try every door and find out which one he gave us the key to.  He will allow one to open and it will be better than we ever could have imagined.
